School Boards

I found it interesting that all of us that work in small towns have entertaining school board stories. It made me realize that it is hard to be a good board member. Maybe the system is fouled up all together. I think we have "good people" on the board but I don't know if our administration would call them "good board members". I guess it is hard to seperate yourself and not get caught up in rumors and opinions.

I think the biggest problem is a lot of the time school boards are just not properly trained for the position. I truly feel most people who volunteer their time have good intentions that sometimes gets blurred by all of the politics that go on in a small town. I think like anything else it is important to get the right people in the right position at the right time and that includes the school board. It would be nice if the small time politics did not have to be involved but they are and it is the administrators job to help them focus on the true goal of student achievement and leave the other baggage behind.

The discussions in class and these posts have made me want to run for the school board. I live in a different district than I work in, so it is a possibility. Ironically, the high school principal in the district I live in is the School Board president in the school district in which I teach. I suppose it could be interesting. As a parent, I obviously have concerns about my children's need being met in a district that is poor and has declining enrollment, but I also think it would be a valuable learning experience as a future administrator.

Our school board members are really educated people that I feel have the best of intentions in mind...that being said, I feel that bonding with a teacher for a day would be a very eye opening experience -- and not just bonding in the "nice schools"! I feel that school board members need to do more than just tour schools, but actually see what happens during a day, talk to to teachers, and students -- then they can be betters "experts" as their job of a school board member.
