Part-Time Administrators
Due to financial situations and student numbers, some schools are having individuals who are qualified and certified administrators teach part-time. Is this beneficial for the school as a whole? I have heard of principals teaching a class to stay in the "flow of things". They believe that they need to remember what is is like in the trenches. But, what happens when it is for two periods or three periods? Individuals who typically excel in one area are stifled due to trying to be two people. Is there a limit to affectiveness? What are your experiences?

We have an assistant principal in our building who also teaches two sections of math. Although we were in desparate need of additional administration, this arrangement can be troublesome at times. Especially when our principal is not in the building and our asst. is in the classroom.
We have argued that in situations such as this, we would prefer there be a "sub" provided so that we have a principal available at all times. But, on the flip-side, I'm not sure this is in the best interest of the students should it be commonplace.
I agree that having an administrator who also has teaching responsibilities could be troublesome, especially in small districts. In a small district, the high school principal has multiple responsibilities and serves as the district representative for many groups. There are numerous meetings that are out of the district that these administrators must attend. I do not think it would be in the best interest of the students to constantly have subs because the principal has other responsibilities. I also think it could be confusing to students. Is this my teacher or is this my principal? Granted it could work in the reverse and the students would feel a closer bond to an administrator who also interacts with them on the classroom level.
